Waste Management

Waste Management

Hyper consumption has become extremely ubiquitous with our modern culture ,so much so that humans produce a monumental amount of waste every day. The world collectively generates 2.01 billion tonnes of municipal solid waste annually and so it is very crucial that a proper system.of waste management be adopted everywhere.
Waste management comprises the set of actions performed in order to manage waste , principally including its collection ,transportation , treatment and finally ,disposal. The process ,right from the start requires to be carefully assessed and managed .
Waste is primarily a direct result of human activities as it comes from a variety of sources ranging from our homes to our offices ,hotels ,restaurants ,not to mention the huge amount of waste influx from industries and factories and also other man made institutions. This waste can be in a solid ,liquid or gaseous form.
Needless to say, waste is a huge threat to our lives ,especially when not treated and disposed of properly. Therefore, waste management must focus on reducing the detrimental effect of waste on human life as well as the environment .

Proper waste management ,especially in large cities requires an integrated system to be put into place which imbibes sustainability in its approach and is supported socially .But often it become an issue of wealth and economic status, as for many developing countries, this rather expensive process often becomes a problem as they deal with perpetual under sourcing and fallible institutions.
Due to the ever increasing globalization and industrialization, there is a need for a more systemized and methodical waste disposal methods to be put into action ,some of which include:-
Landfill
Incineration
Waste compaction
Biogas generation
Composting , Vermicomposting etc.

In India ,we have the municipal corporation , a local government body , that takes care of waste in urban areas. This body deals with large amounts of municipal solid waste everyday which arises from household ,commercial and industrial activities.

The tale of the waste -energy plan in the city of Ranchi

In October of 2016,The Municipal corporation of Ranchi ,the capital city of Jharkhand initiated the waste to energy project ,an initiative aimed at streamlining waste management by combusting waste to produce electricity . This concept was considered after its success in countries like Germany and Sweden .
Everything set into place ,the biggest problem which the council faced was that people as well as organizations were not segregating their waste at the source itself ,something followed with diligence in the western countries that inspired this project. This was a major issue for the proper running of these plants and ultimately , the project was found to be non economically viable and its set up is indefindelty delayed for now.

The aforementioned failure of the project In the capital city sheds light on the fact that efficient waste management starts right at our homes. We need to understand just how important individual action is in making sure that the waste we produce is treated and disposed of properly ,paving way for a more clean sustainable and environmentally conscious future.
