Recently our Union Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Hardeep Singh Puri announced the results of Swachh Survekshan 2020, at the virtual event ‘Swachh Mahotsav‘ where 129 awards were given in different categories.
So, What is Swachh Survekshan ?
Swachh Survekshan is an annual survey of cleanliness, hygiene and sanitation in the cities across India. This is launched by our Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on May 2016 as Swachh Survekshan grameen 2016 to monitor the progress in 2016, only in 73 cities survey were taken where 53 cities were with a population of over million and all states capitals whereas by now , the survey had grown up to 4242 cities which make record of the largest survey of cleanliness ever taken throughout the world. These surveys are carried out by the Quality Council of India.
Ranking and Major Categories-
This year the ministry has released rankings based on the categorization of cities on population, instead of releasing overall ranking. The category based on population were introduced in 2019 while this year the exact groupings have been changed.
Cities with a population of more than 10 lakh;
Indore ranked 1st, securing the rank for the 4 consecutive year, followed by Surat and Navi Mumbai.
Cities with a population of 1-10 lakh;
Chhattisgarh’s Ambikapur has been surveyed as the cleanest city in the country, followed by Mysore and New Delhi.
Cities with population of less than 1 lakh
Karad secured cleanest city with the population of less than 1 lakh people.
● Varanasi has been ranked the cleanest among the 46 Ganga towns
● Jalandhar got the top rank among the contentment
● New Delhi was a cleanest capital
● Chhattisgarh was ranked the cleanest state, with over a hundred urban local bodies (ULBs) or cities.
● Jharkhand was cleanest state with less than 100 ULBs or cities.
● Swachh Survekshan League 2019-
To ensure the sustainability on the ground performance of Swachh Bharat abhiyan the ministry of union housing and urban affair introduce Swachh Survekshan League. It is a quarterly cleanliness assessment of cities and towns in 3 quarters with 25% weightage integrated into the final results of Swachh Survekshan.
● SBM 2.0 (2nd phase of SBM-U)
The ministry is also actively walking upon the second phase of Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM), which was initially supposed to be done till March 2020 but due to coronavirus it’s extended till March 2021.
It envisioned to taking care of cities and town and make it free of open defecation and zero dumping waste. It also takes care of treating all wastewater before discharging into the water bodies and their maximum possible range.
● Swachh Survekshan 2021
Ministry of union housing and affairs said that they’re going to launch sixth edition of the survey. They are going to introduce new performance category,’Prerak Dauur Samman ‘.
It has a total of 5 additional subcategories namely divya(platinum), Anupam(Gold), Ujjwal(Silver), Udit(Bronze) and Aarohi( Aspiring).
