Effect of Plastic upon our Biodiversity

Biodiversity refers to the sum total of various types of microbes, Flora and fauna found in a particular habitat. Nowadays the term is more often heard with Global warming and Endangerment of species throughout the world. Day by day our biodiversity is becoming more fragile. Conservation of biodiversity has become the need of the hour.

Plastic has become a major threat to the planet. Without any doubt , we can say that plastic is tearing down our biodiversity. According to surveys 99% of plastic that we use is responsible for climate change and in that only 9% of plastic is recycled. Plastic has many health hazards upon our nature. Plastic waste is choking in our world. Plastic become hazardous when they are used excessively and are not recycled properly.

Burning of plastic gives out harmful gases and may cause many health issues including high risk of cancer, asthma, infertility and developmental issues in human beings and other life forms. When plastic waste are thrown carelessly it might lead to the deadth of stray animals as they accidentally ingest these plastics. It not affects the terrestrial animals but also affects the Marine ecosystem.

Each year over one hundred thousand marine species die because of marine debris. Fish, seabirds, seals, sea turtles and marine mammals are the victims of this disaster. A recent discovery made by the U.N found that the increase of plastic in some areas of the ocean has become 60 % more than planktons. Plastic doesn’t get rotted, but when they are exposed to sunlight, wind and water they broke down into toxic plastic particles and many marine animals mistake these for planktons and eat their fill, which in turn end up in the sea food we eat. Scientist predict that the weight of ocean plastic debris will exceed the total weight of all of the fish in the sea by 2050.

In India major amount of plastic waste are thrown carelessly in roadsides. These thrown plastic debris are very dangerous because during monsoon season these plastic utensils form a platform for mosquitoes to breed which results in the spreading of several diseases. These plastic waste destroys our soil and water resources. It also affects the growth of plants.

It’s time for us to make a change. If we continue to exploit our biodiversity our existence will be in danger. We must avoid this situation. In order to save our biodiversity let us join our hands and say no to plastic. Let us rise up and save our future generation from this mighty disaster.
